We think the council has done well to uphold those values, and a “Yes” vote for Measure I will confirm that. And it is the responsibility of the elected Dana Point City Council, not the voters, to weigh the city’s tremendous need for amenities and maintaining the spirit of the community.
We think it is important, and necessary, for development in the Dana Point Town Center to continue to have flexibility.
No two developments are alike, and what makes sense for one may not work for the other. That is why we recommend a “No” vote on Measure H and “Yes” vote on Measure I. While the above doesn’t offer much guidance, what is important to remember is that Measure H imposes rigid design constraints uniformly across the Town Center development area in what we feel is akin to ballot-box zoning since changes would be subject to a vote of the people. On the other hand is Measure I, which “ratifies the Town Center Plan previously approved by the City Council and the California Coastal Commission, as well as the amendments thereto approved by the City Council in 2015.” On one hand, according to ballot literature, Measure H would change “the Town Center Plan previously approved by the City Council and the California Coastal Commission, as well as the amendments thereto approved by the City Council in 2015.” Voters in Dana Point are faced with competing measures on the future of the city’s Town Center.
